Tango Porteño occupies a luxurious art-deco MGM cinema beside the Obelisk, restored and turned over to a production that runs closer to Broadway than to a tango house: dozens of artists, an eight-piece orchestra, and staging built for a big room. The building dates from the period when tango was still considered too risqué for polite company, which the venue makes a good deal of.

What makes it useful on a dinner site is that it is the only venue here selling a genuine **middle tier**. Most tango houses give you two choices: a bare ticket, or a full three-course dinner at roughly double the price. Tango Porteño inserts a third — **admission with empanadas and drinks** — which covers the common case of wanting something in your hand and something to eat without committing to ninety minutes at the table beforehand.

The drinks on the upgraded tiers are unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks. The bare admission ticket includes nothing, so as at Señor Tango and Madero Tango, the real gap between the cheapest ticket and the next one up is partly a bar tab.

The full **dinner and drinks** option is three courses served from 8:30pm ahead of a 9:30pm curtain, with the performance itself running 1 hour 15 minutes. Seating is assigned by the venue.

One practical warning that matters more here than anywhere else in the city: **sandals and flip-flops are not accepted**. Of all the venues on this site, this is the one where the smart-casual dress code is actually enforced at the door — and Buenos Aires is hot in January and February, so people do turn up in sandals and are turned away. If you own one pair of closed shoes on this trip, wear them to Tango Porteño.
